Pharmaceutical Information Center (PIC)

The PIC is a drug information service located in the Mylan School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University. Its major goals are to: provide responses to drug information requests generated by alumni, preceptors, students and faculty of the School of Pharmacy; to serve as an experiential education site for graduate and undergraduate students; and to maintain a core library of reference texts, periodicals, and computer programs for use by faculty and students of the School of Pharmacy. The Center accepts requests from the Duquesne University community, other health professionals, and the general public. Consumers may submit requests by telephone or e-mail.
The Pharmaceutical Information Center concentrates its efforts on supplying practice information related to new drugs, adverse reactions, drug interactions, foreign products, drug use during pregnancy and lactation, identification of solid dosage forms, dosage, etc. Journal citations, Internet sites, and other sources of information are also provided.
Resources of the Pharmaceutical Information Center consist of approximately two-hundred fifty textbooks/compendia and twenty periodicals. Routinely used databases include the MICROMEDEX® Healthcare Series, e-Facts™, and Lexi-Comp Online™. A number of print and electronic drug interaction, tablet identification, natural and complementary medicine, teratogenicity, breastfeeding, and intravenous compatibility programs are also available. Bibliographic searches are performed using MEDLINE, International Pharmaceutical Abstracts (IPA™), and other databases maintained by the university library.
The Pharmaceutical Information Center DOES NOT provide counseling services for drug and alcohol abuse, nor does it distribute literature on the topics. In addition, the Center DOES NOT offer information on poisoning or drug overdoses.

PIC Question of the Week
Each month, the Pharmaceutical Information Center (PIC) receives approximately 250 questions from health professionals and the general public. Many of these inquiries are unique and require considerable investigation. The Experiential Clerkship Students rotating in the Center have recommended we begin a service to our alumni, faculty, and students that provides the Center’s response to some of these interesting requests. We have named this section the “PIC Question of the Week.” Please note the accompanying index. Every attempt will be made to add at least one question to the program each week during the academic year. Due to space limitations, only a few key references are included with each answer. Additional references may be obtained by contacting the PIC. Any suggestions or comments regarding this program would be appreciated.
