Global Community
Motivated by Duquesne University’s DU More…initiative and commitment to contribute toward the fight against HIV/AIDS in Africa, I founded an organization - Drugs for AIDS and HIV Patients (DAHP). I reach out internationally through programs that focus on prevention education, care and treatment of HIV/AIDS children, especially orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) in Nigeria. DAHP’s activities include the following:
Prevention Awareness and Education
- HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention education to high school children in the Southwest of Nigeria (over 5000 children in 8 schools)
- Publication of a book on HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention in 2005, targeted at high school children. The title is “Out of the Mouths of Children…and What Adults Should Know about HIV/AIDS.
- Prevention-of-mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV/AIDS (funded Caesarean section or guided normal delivery of over 35 babies)
Voluntary Confidential Counseling, Testing and Monitoring
- Conduct workshops and campaign in schools, churches and the local communities
- Screening of people including children for HIV (screened approximately 10,000)
- Monitors the response to treatment (CD4) of patients
SAVE A CHILD or S.A.C Program
- Our newest initiative-SAVE-A-CHILD or S.A.C is targeted toward HIV/AIDS orphans. It was birthed in March 2006 but launched in December 2007 at Duquesne University. It grew as a result of the starving, lack of care and later loss of two children among the ones we serve in Nigeria. S.A.C. is a christened name given by a church friend for the burden and passion that she and DAHP have for children
- DAHP takes care of 20 OVC through provision of food, clothing, school supplies and supplementing transportation costs of the parents to collect their drugs. We have a total of about 60 children
- An Extended Family Home (Sarah’s Home) for orphan and most vulnerable children in the group was started in early 2006 in Nigeria. The Extended Home also serves as after School Day Care and Play Center for other kids and will be used as a training center for mothers or women (80-90% of whom are widows)
Care for Adults Living with HIV/AIDS
- Supplementation of transportation costs to travel to another city where the drugs are provided by the government
- Home care (visitation) to families affected or living with HIV/AIDS
