Carl A. Anderson
joined the Duquesne University faculty in 2002 as
an assistant professor of pharmaceutical science.
He is a member of the Duquesne University Center
for Pharmaceutical Technology (DCPT). His current
focus is on building and leading a research group
to explore new and existing analytical technologies
and demonstrate their relevance to process analytical
technology (PAT) applications. In addition to exploring
PAT tools, his group uses these tools to enhance
the understanding of the chemistry and physics of
pharmaceutical technology.
After completing
his graduate work at the University of Texas at
Austin in 1995, he spent seven years working for
the three different incarnations of the pharmaceutical
company that became known as Aventis Pharmaceuticals.
While there, he led the team that developed, validated,
and implemented Aventiso first PAT based analytical
methods. He served on the executive committee of
the NIR Validation Working Group (NIRVWoG) that
authored the revisions to USP.
Research
Program
- PAT tools
- Developing the science-based
methodologies for validating the use of PAT tools
in the pharmaceutical industry.
- Application of analytical
sensors for the enhanced understanding of the chemistry
and physics of pharmaceutical manufacturing.
- Exploring new unit-operations
and whole system applications of PAT.
- Developing methods
and systems applicable to continuous manufacturing
processes for pharmaceutical products.
- Chemical imaging
- Utilizing NIR chemical
imaging as a tool for understanding measurements
made by conventional diffuse reflectance NIR methods.
- Exploring the capabilities
of NIR microscopy, including performance assessment
of chemical imaging systems, qualification for use
in a regulatory environment and data analysis of
hyperspectral data sets.
- Development of methods
employing NIR microscopy for use in formulation
development of solids.
- Laboratory personnel
- Graduate students
in the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
- Motivated undergraduate
students (bachelor and Pharm.D.) seeking a research
experience.
