Message from the Dean
Dear Alumni and Friends,
This issue of the Pharmacy eNews focuses on our graduating class of 2009. As I mentioned previously, they are a bright and energetic group of young women and men who are ready to accept the challenges of their chosen career path. The messages they received during graduation from a variety of speakers were both significant and specific to them. Fr. French, Director of Spiritan Campus Ministry, first challenged our students to look at everyone who comes for pharmacy services as someone in need and to offer them the care they require. He described a new disease state to them, which he hopes will never be cured: chronic compassion. He also blessed the healing hands of all graduates in attendance at the Commencement Mass. Our Commencement speaker, RADM Robert Pittman, spoke to our students about preparing, caring, and daring. He delivered a great message to these new graduates. Justin Julius, the president of the class, spoke to his peers regarding where they have been and where they need to go, and he invoked them to do their professional best in the world. If you come into contact with our new graduates, please welcome them into the profession and the Pharmacy Alumni Association. We expect them to make the same kind of impact on the profession that you have made.
We are currently focusing on our Academic Partners Network, which grew out of a need to connect to alumni and pharmacy constituents in a new way. The Academic Partners Network includes relationships with community, acute care, ambulatory practices and global pharmacy education. These academic partners have helped us further the five strategic initiatives of the School: Active Learning Culture/Diversity, Medication Therapy Management, Cultural Competence, Continuous Professional Development and Translational Research. They also provide our practice faculty with scholarship opportunities.

Please keep in touch with us. Best wishes and God bless you and your families.
Sincerely,
J. Douglas Bricker, Ph.D.

Adeyeye Recognized for Outstanding Contributions
Dr. Moji Christianah Adeyeye, professor of pharmaceutics at the Mylan School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University, was recently named a Fellow in Pharmaceutical Technology by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS).
This prestigious award recognizes individuals for outstanding contributions that elevate the stature of the pharmaceutical sciences and for professional excellence as reflected by scholarly and research contributions. Adeyeye was one of 15 fellows selected this year by a committee composed of colleagues from Europe, Australia and North America. “It is gratifying to be recognized by one’s peers as an outstanding scientist,” Adeyeye said. “I have not had time to really reflect on a lot of my scientific endeavors. This recognition helped to crystallize them.“
Adeyeye was born in Nigeria and has been a member of the Duquesne faculty since 1989. Her area of expertise is pharmaceutical technology. This includes preformulation research, which involves understanding the science that increases a drug's ability to work with other ingredients in a formulation; pharmaceutical unit processes; controlled release dosage form technology; and granulation technology, which is directly related to manufacturing of the drug product.
Adeyeye has authored numerous scientific publications and presentations and serves as a pharmaceutical industry consultant in the U.S. In addition, she is a member of the National Institutes
of Health Special Emphasis Panel and reviews manuscripts for six pharmaceutical journals.
On a global level, Adeyeye is founder of Drugs for AIDS and HIV Patients, an organization committed to prevention education, care and treatment of HIV/AIDS children in Nigeria. This initiative grew to include funding the delivery of more than 40 babies in an attempt to prevent transmission of HIV as well as the creation of an extended family home and care for adults living with HIV/AIDS.
She received a Fulbright Scholar Award in 2005 for an African regional research program on AIDS and AIDS-related research. In 2006, she began a compassionate treatment of 12 children
via extemporaneous compounding and dosing with drugs.
A Mount Lebanon resident, Adeyeye is also the 2008 recipient of the Duquesne University Presidential Award for Service.
The AAPS provides a dynamic international forum for the exchange of knowledge among pharmaceutical scientists to enhance their contributions to health.
Students Attend PPA Conference
DU students Kyle Hampson of Mountville, Jennifer Myers of Sellersville, Lauren Pusateri of Pittsburgh and Alexa Sevin of Sewickley, were among 21 students to attend a program sponsored by the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association March 6-8.
The second annual Government Relations Advocacy for Student Pharmacists program at the Pennsylvania Pharmacists Association focused on government relations, legislative action, media training and regulatory process. The program was organized, in part, to encourage students to remain politically active throughout their pharmacy careers.
Alumni Fleishaker Named 2009 Outstanding Graduate Program Alumnus
Joseph C. Fleishaker, Ph.D., of Wildwood, Mo., has been named the 2009 University of Kentucky Outstanding Graduate Program Alumnus for the Pharmaceutical Sciences. Fleishaker received his Ph.D. in pharmaceutical sciences from the UK College of Pharmacy in 1987. He is interim head of inflammation clinical research and vice president of site head for pharmacokinetics, dynamics and metabolism (PDM) at Pfizer's St. Louis Laboratories.
Established in 2006, the goal of the award is to honor graduates of the program in recognition of their accomplishments and contributions to scholarship, education and research in the pharmaceutical sciences. Fleishaker will be honored at the UK reception at the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) Annual Meeting set for Nov. 8-12, 2009, in Los Angeles. He also will be invited to be a featured speaker at the Pharmaceutical Science Research Day Meeting (formerly the Postgraduate Conference) with an upcoming date to be determined.
Dr. Fleishaker has worked in large pharma for 21 years with 19 years experience in clinical pharmacology and translational medicine, including two years leading a preclinical drug metabolism group. Currently, he leads a team of 55 scientists in the St. Louis Pharmacokinetics, Dynamics and Metabolism unit. He is a Fellow of the American College of Clinical Pharmacology and AAPS.

Best Practices in Your Pharmacy
As we travel across the country and meet alumni, we find that they are engaged not only in some very traditional practices, but also in some unique professional activities. We would like to learn about the unique pharmacy activities in which you are engaged with your patients and to share them with other alumni. We are asking you to send us the following information: type of practice, unique features, impact that it has had on your patient population and photos that illustrate what you are doing. Please forward this information and any questions to Debra DiBiasi at dibiasi@duq.edu.

Legislative Days
March 25, 2009
PPA Pharmacy Legislative Day, held in Harrisburg, was attended by pharmacists and pharmacy students from across Pennsylvania. About 20 Duquesne University student pharmacists came out in their white coats to show our school's strength! Participants were able to meet with legislators and staffers to discuss important issues of the profession focusing on proposed cuts to PACE Reimbursement, Fair Audits, Expansion of Scope of Practice, and Safe Medication Disposal. The day included screenings, displays and information provided by six of the Pennsylvania schools of pharmacy in the East Wing Rotunda of the Capitol. The Mylan School of Pharmacy students provided attendees with information on Diabetes Management and Blood Glucose, Hemoglobin A1c, and Neuropathy Foot Screenings.
